The baby here is, in my mind, Christopher Sim's, who never returns from the war. We know from canon that Leisha Tanner went to see Marina Sim - there's nothing about a baby in canon, of course, and we know Marina committed suicide (most likely?) soon after anyway - but what if Leisha found Marina either pregnant, or with the baby already there? What does that change?
